Cool Geeky Dog Names for Tech Nerds

One of the most important (and fun!) part of getting a dog is picking a name. Sometimes a dog has such a distinctive look or behavior that they practically name themselves, but sometimes it’s up to you to put your unique spin on things. When you work in tech, coming up with a cool techie dog names becomes a bragging right.

If you are a tech geek or are just a big nerd, here are 25 names for both doggos and doggettes that have a uniquely techy appeal. Some might require some explanation when you tell your friends, but that’s part of the fun!

25 Techie Dog Names for Boy Dogs

  • Einstein: (works for both the scientist and Back to the Future reference–#meta)
  • Mack: (short for Carmack—John Carmack is one of the fathers of modern gaming)
  • Swot: (instead of Spot, get it?)
  • Krypto: (both a reference to cryptocurrency, and Superman’s dog!)
  • Bunsen
  • Beaker: These last two work together, so it’s great if you have a home and heart big enough to adopt a pair! These are the scientists on the Muppets whose experiments often go hilariously wrong.
  • Neo: Keanu Reeves character in the sci-fi/cyberpunk classic The Matrix
  • Riker: Second-in-command of Captain Picard Star Trek: The Next Generation
  • Mal: Short for Malcom Reynolds, cult favorite space pirate and captain of the Serenity on Firefly.
  • Kirk: The captain of the Starship Enterprise in Star Trek, famously played by William Shatner
  • Bradbury (Brad for short): Reference to Ray Bradbury, one of the greatest sci-fi authors/screenwriters of all time.
  • Flop: A computing term for processing speed. Also great for a dog with big, floppy ears.
  • Byte: Computing term for a unit of data. Also great for big chewers.
  • Newton: As in Isaac. Also the name given to Apple’s first line of PDA’s, the forunner of smartphones.
  • Joss: As in Whedon, pretty much the father of modern pop sci-fi
  • Satoshi: Reference to Satoshi Nakamoto, the inventor of Bitcoin, who may or may not be a real person.
  • Rico: For Johnny Rico, main character of Starship Troopers
  • Ben: (works for both Franklin and Kenobi)
  • Bones: Nickname of the ship’s doctor on the Enterprise, Bones McCoy. And, you know…dogs love bones.
  • Scotty: The engineer of the Enterprise. Great if your lazy pup needs more power!
  • Tribble: A great name for a fluffy little pup, these are the creatures on one of the most famous early Star Trek episodes, “The Trouble with Tribbles”
  • Fang: Hagrid’s dog in the Harry Potter books. Great if your dog is huge but a “bloody coward”
  • Bernie: Short for Tim Berners-Lee, cited as the inventor of the world wide web.
  • Cerf: Vinton Cerf, another one of the “fathers of the internet”, worked at DARPA to develop TCP/IP.
  • Parker: As in Shawn Parker, founder of Napster and investor in many other apps.

  • Ava: The name of the robot who (spoiler alert!) passes the Turing Test in Ex Machina
  • Ruby: As in On Rails, the web framework
  • Laika: The first dog in space!
  • Curie: As in Marie, the famous female scientist who discovered radiation.
  • Ripley: Famously played by Sigourney Weaver, the heroine of the Alien movie franchise
  • Leela: Cycloptic heroine of Futurama
  • Zelda: Video game princess and namesake of one of the most famous game franchises of all time.
  • Scully: Dana Scully, FBI agent on The X-Files.
  • Ada: As in Lovelace, who worked on Charles Babbage’s original computing machine
  • Margaret: For Margaret Hamilton, one of the most (if not the most) important women in the history of technology, who invented software engineering.
  • Clara: As in Oswald, the doctor’s assistant on Doctor Who
  • Trinity: The heroine/love interest of the Matrix film series
  • Zilla: Popular suffix on loan words in tech
  • Penny: Noted dog lover Kaley Cuoco’s character on The Big Bang Theory
  • Nyota: First name of Uhura, a revolutionary female character on the original Star Trek
  • Troi: As in Deanna Troi, commander and ship’s counselor of the Enterprise on Star Trek: The Next Generation
  • Janeway (Jane for short): Ship’s doctor on Star Trek: The Next Generation
  • Ripley: Famously played by Sigourney Weaver, the heroine of the Alien movie franchise
  • Easley: As in Annie Easley, a barrier-breaking African-American female computer scientist and mathematician
  • Adele: For Adele Goldberg, computer scientist who was integral to the development of early PC’s (it might be easier to say it’s for the singer!)
  • Arwen: Half-elven heroine of The Lord of the Rings books
  • Randi: For Randi Zuckerberg, former CEO of Facebook
  • Sandy: Short for Sheryl Sandberg, CEO of Facebook.
  • Oro: Oro Munro is the real name of Storm of the X-Men.
  • Elektra: Awesome female ninja and counterpart to Daredevil
