An RFID pet door and a microchip pet door both stop your flap from operating an open-door policy for the entire neighborhood. The difference is where the identity lives: on the collar, or inside the animal.
That sounds tidy right up until you meet the cat who has shed every collar she’s ever owned, the dog who swims with tremendous enthusiasm, or the household with three pets and one tag that has definitively vanished. The acronym matters far less than whether the credential survives your pet’s actual life.
An RFID pet door reads a programmed tag worn on the collar. The tag approaches, the reader recognizes it, the door unlocks or opens. Magnetic and electromagnetic cat-door systems run on the same principle with older technology: permission travels with the pet rather than inside the pet.
A cat door with collar sensor works well when the animal already wears a collar comfortably and you want straightforward control over who gets in. For a dog, a collar tag is usually the practical choice, and often the only one — most dogs already wear a collar, and implanted-chip readers are overwhelmingly built into cat-sized products.
